The Super Bowl is as much, if not more, about culture as it is about sport. It is seen by most Americans and most marketers as an entertainment property rather than as a sports event. The Super Bowl, in the USA at least, is bigger than sport.

 

That’s why advertisers are prepared to pay mega money (a reported $6.5m for 30-seconds) for ad space and that’s why so many Big Game activations, commercials and campaigns are more about cute animals, celebrity, comedy, music and warming nostalgia, rather than the more familiar sports marketing themes of skills, teamwork, community, inspiration and passion.
