South Korean winter adventure clothes shoppers were treated to an integrated virtual reality South Pole experience and a real-life dog sled stunt at a North Face Seoul store.
To launch its new McMurdo winter wear range, North Face’s #SuddenExploration VR experience saw in-store consumers invited to test the new cold weather coats by sitting in a sled and wearing Oculus Rift goggles for a 3D South Pole experience.
But, unbeknown to the shoppers, the virtual reality immersion then blended into a real worlddog-sled stunt with a real pack of huskies pulling them through the shop.
The interactive initiative aims to bring to life North Face’s ‘Never Stop Exploring’ brand promise.

VR is all the range in sports marketing and sponsorship activation – with stand out recent initiatives including Gatorade’s ‘Bryce Harper At Bat 360’ MLB playoff initiative, AIG’s RWC ‘Haka 360’, Stella Artois’ ‘360 Rufus‘ Wimbledon work and Samsung’s Galaxy WSL immersive surf experience.
What we love about this particular initiative is the real world enhancement.
This is a striking in-store stunt and whilst it must be unforgettable for the shoppers themselves, the film of the initiative is also proving popular as it has racked up 4,218,072 YouTube views to date.
This isn’t the first innovative North Face stunt in South Korea, as it follows last year’s viral disappearing floor stun.
The North Face is also an official partner of the Korean Olympic team and in October 2015 activated the partnership with the following film promoting its Winter Jacket range fronted by two of the country’s leading Olympians: gymnast Son Yeon-jae and badminton star Lee Yong-dae.
