6 November saw the online and television debut of JD Sports Christmas campaign, called ‘JD Wonderland’, which features a team of famous sport and entertainment faces and challenges viewers to spot them all.
The sports retailer worked with Manchester’s The Chase Creative Consultancy (and its partner production company The Chase Films) to create a campaign which features the likes of Anthony Joshua, Rita Ora, and Virgil Van Dijk plus Mabel, Tom Davies, AJ Tracey, Maya Jama, Leomie Anderson, Sam Kerr, Wizkid and Aitch).
The hero spot’s narrative arc opens up in front of a shop window where a child is staring in wonder at a pair of trainers. Suddenly, the mannequin (which turns out to be Michael Dapaah) comes to life and invites him into the fantastical JD Wonderland world behind the window.
The commercial comes in 70-, 40- and 30-second versions and leads a campaign running across TV, VOD and social media throughout the festive period.
Results:
Since it was first posted on 6 November, the spot has notched up 716,512 views on the retailer’s own YouTube channel, plus 200,000 on its Twitter feed, 61,000 on Instagram and a further 6,400 on Facebook.
Comment:
This is a classic magic of Christmas retailer commercial which blends dreamy escapism with evolving sets, futuristic designs and plenty of JD product.
It takes the viewer on something of a rollercoaster ride through a rollicking range of worlds and along the way meets a team of famous faces and it was all shot over seven days in London and Manchester.
