The World Health Organisation (WHO)’s World Mental Health Day, 10 October, was particularly poignant this year due to the stresses and pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic and this led to an increased number of brands rolling out initiatives aimed to raising awareness, boosting funds and supporting those with conditions like anxiety and depression and the sports world was part of the push.
ASICS EMEA created an initiative based around the idea that for some a run is much more than a run – it is a way to feel better, both physically and mentally.
Hubbed around a bespoke site (at https://www.asics.com/gb/en-gb/mk/in-my-shoes) the ‘In My Shoes’ initiative shared inspiring audio stories from people who have discovered the benefits of sport and movement on their mental wellbeing and linked this to a mass participation event.
The stories themselves were designed to be listened to by ‘people of the move’ so that listeners can literally experience what it’s like to put themselves in the shoes of the storyteller.
The stories can be listened to on Spotify. Google and Apple and include:
The Pressure Of Perfect
The Feeling Of Free
Confidence & Self Love
Exercising For The Right Reasons
The sportswear brand also organised a parallel virtual/physical mass particpation run to mark the day with four run categories – 3km / 5km / 10km / 20km – and invited runners of all abilities to run in solidarity and raise awareness of mental health issues.
