To front its #TroopThanks programme at Charlotte Motor Speedway, NASCAR sponsor Bank Of America surprised US Army veteran Rick Groesbeck and his son during what they thought was a quick tour of the trackside Hendrick Motorsports Museum with a stunning race experience.
To thank Groesbeck for his service, Bank of America partnered with NASCAR legend Rick Hendrick and Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott to give the two race fans with the experience of a lifetime.
Hendrick personally surprised Rick and his son with a VIP tour of the facility and garage before introducing them to Elliott. Who took them for a high speed spin around the track – enabling the veteran to fulfil his childhood dream.
For a final surprise, Groesbeck was invited to wave the green flag at the start of the Bank of America 500 itself.
This strand was a front end promotion extending the #troopthanks campaign.
The race day campaign centrepiece saw the banking brand hosted a special ‘Stand and Salute’ moment during pre-race – part of nits wider ‘Express Your Thanks’ campaign to honouring the US military.
Moments before the green flag for Saturday’s Bank Of America 500 night race in the Chase, fans were asked to write messages of thanks to the military and/or share messages on social media using #TroopThanks.
Bank of America is donating $1 per message of support.
Comment
This Bank Of America NASCAR activation is just one pillar of the banks powerful, ong-running US military and veterans support programme.
Interestingly, this year the brand chose to switch strategies for its MLB baseball activation moving away from its previous CSR focus on supporting the US military (see our 2013 and 2014 case studies)
and switched towards a more consumer-led, fan-focused apporoach to activating its MLB baseball rights in the form of #MLBmemorybank (see case study).
