Leveraging spiking soccer interest in the UK around The FA Cup Final and the climax of the Premier League, national broadcaster BBC finally released its UEFA Euro 2020 promo a month ahead of the tournament kick-off.
Euro 2020, which is a full year behind schedule due to the pandemic, is scheduled to run between 11 June and 11 July 2021 with its 51 fixtures being hosted across 11 host cities with the semi-finals and final being played at Wembley Stadium.
So, appropriately enough for a property so long delayed, the BBC Sport animated trailer is called ‘The Wait Is Over’.
Opening with a slowly moving clock, the 65-second spot is set in a giant airport style waiting room where Europe’s biggest football stars sit alongside fans all waiting patiently for time to pass until finally a ball arrives and the action starts.
Released on 15 May ahead of the Emirates FA Cup Final, the spot features England, Scotland and Wales supporters alongside the continent’s biggest stars: including Portugal’s Christian Ronaldo, England’s Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford, Wales’ Gareth Bale and France’s Kylian Mbappé.
The animation was helmed by Director Nicos Livesey of Blinkink (also known for his Adidas work and his films for virtual band Gorillaz) and it features The Chemical Brothers new track called ‘The Darkness That You Fear’ as a soundtrack.
The promo film is the final work from the BBC under longtime Executive Creative Director Helen Rhodes who leaves the broadcaster for creative agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty.
Comment:
We can’t help but feel that this animatic promo is something of a blend of Nike’s award-winning 1994 ‘Brazil Airport’ ad and Nike’s 2014 ‘Risk Everything > The Last Game’ animated Brazil World Cup short film.
