To promote the return of Peter Crouch’s BBC podcast, the former England footballer pranked his wife, Abbey Clancy, with a fake tattoo stunt.
The stunt, developed in-house by BBC Creative, saw the former player ‘punk’ his wife by getting a fake tattoo – a deliberately rubbish image of him doing his famous ‘robot’ goal celebration with the words ‘Back Stronger’ – and then video calling his wife Abbey Clancy from the tattoo parlour to show her what he had just got done.
Unsurprisingly, much to the player and the producer’s delight, she wasn’t too happy about her husband’s new ‘tat’.
The social video stunt publicised the third series of the surprise hit ‘That Peter Crouch Podcast’ – in which the much travelled and recently retired striker talks football, life and culture with BBC Sport’s Tom Fordyce and Radio 1’s Chris Stark – which offers a humorous perspective on the life of a professional football player and aims to act as a comic, yet serious guide to the game covering everything from dressing rooms and transfers, to training and staying on the right side of ‘the boss’.
The initiative was created by in-house agency BBC Creative with a team that included ECD Helen Rhodes, Creative Directors Matt Pam and Simon Hipwell, Creatives Abigail Stephenson and Matt Jones, Director and Editor Mark Robertson, Producer Greg Marshall, Production Managers Caroline Greig and Sam Dobbyn, Project Manager Phoebe Bibbings, Design Lead Laurence Honderick, Designers Johnny Ace, Mirjami Qin, Amy Fullalove and Andrew Johnston, plus Motion Designers Lee Wignall and Pedro Ramos
Comment:
The objective here was to ensure the podcast’s return to BBC Sounds didn’t go unnoticed and it certainly achieved that with an impressive 105,130 YouTube views on the Radio 5 channel within 14 days of its 6 January release.
