The last week of September saw Budweiser launch a UK football campaign exploring the business ventures of footballers: ‘Side Hustles’ is a new docuseries shines a spotlight on the off-pitch interests of Wilfried Zaha, Eniola Aluko and Tyrone Mings.
Side Hustles sets out to give soccer stars an opportunity to show that there’s more to them than just football and that some of them are creative, aspirational, business minded individuals who are role models to young people beyond the football space.
The campaign, which leverages the brand’s status as the Official Beer of the Premier League and which links to its umbrella ‘Kings of the Game’ platform, is Bud’s first original social series commissioned in the UK.
The initiative, which was created with The Story Lab and DAZN Media and developed and produced by Renowned Films and Ten Toes Media, launched with a docu-film focusing on Crystal Palace attacker Wilfried Zaha.
The seven-minute spot provides a glimpse into his fashion business experience through the Ivory Coast international’s ‘Long Live’ clothing brand.
Future episodes will feature former England striker Eniola Aluko showcasing her travel lifestyle brand ‘Hyphenated People’ and Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings’ interior design brand ‘KTM Design’.
Comment:
As the power and reach of athlete media becomes ever stronger in its ability and effectiveness in engaging and influencing audiences, the creation of this kind of athlete-fronted online film format is becoming an increasingly popular sports marketing tactic.
This new UK docu-series is one of several recent Budweiser European football campaigns leveraging the start of the new 20/21 season.
Other recent football activations include its new partnership with Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi.
