South American Football Confederation CONMEBOL honoured Diego Armando Maradona with an ‘out of this world’ tribute on the anniversary of his death by naming a star after the Argentina and Napoli super star.
Agency Mercado McCann developed the idea and enacted the naming of a star and supporting campaign for CONMEBOL as a tribute to one of the greatest footballers ever to play the game based around the thought that Maradona should be held in highest esteem and continue to shine forever and transcend frontiers.
The Maradona star – who’s coordinates are RA: 12h 08m 21.5s DEC: -50° 50′ 16.8″ –was registered by Star Registration under the ID 1307-87268-2718878.
The project was unveiled during a ceremony in Montevideo – which will host this year’s Libertadores and Sudamericana Cup finals – backed by a press release which stated: “Because he shone on earth and now he will illuminate us from the sky.”
The tribute was promoted through an integrated campaign which was spearheaded by a hero spot running across its social channels and amplified through a PR push and media campaign.

Argentine international teammates of Maradona’s from the 1986 squad which won the FIFA World Cup in Mexico were present at the CONMEBOL event social media broadcast to pay their own tribute to the player: Nery Pumpido, Ricardo Giusti, Oscar Ruggeri, Checho Batista and Jorge Burruchaga recalled what it meant to play with the former national side skipper.
“Diego was from another planet,” said Burruchaga (who scored the winning goal in the final against Germany after a great pass from Maradona). “He got all of us used to his dribbling past all his illnesses, all his episodes and for us, this was just one more [of those events] Diego was going to dribble through. He couldn’t. I am convinced we all have a destiny and this was his. I want to remain next to that gladiator who helped us be world champions (…) we are going to miss him for the rest of our lives.”
