College football fans of teams from rights across the USA storm a football field for an ESPN’s blockbuster ‘The Game Needs Us: Who’s In?’ spot to generate excitement around the new season
Helmed by director Peter Berg (who also directed Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor and Patriot’s Day, as well as the NFL’s 2019 Thursday Night Football campaign) and created out of McKinney.
The commercial, debuting on 27 August, stars a huge crowd of supporters – featuring 189 principals, 225 extras and 23 college programs – and sets out to capture fans’ intense passion for the game.
The spot starts on the backs of players from 2019 National Champs Clemson as they charge onto the field surrounded by mascots and supporters from multiple teams: including Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish Leprechaun, LSU’s Mike the Tiger, Syracuse’s Otto the Orange, USC’s Song Girls, University of Alabama Crimson Tide’s Big Al, University of Washington’s Harry the Husky and more.
The fans run onto the pitch cheering, flipping and bouncing to give viewers a small taste of the raging rivalry to come in the season ahead.
The campaign’s objective is to show that college football is as much about its supporters as it is about the sport itself by showcasing stories that shape the game and the spot’s end copy reads: “This season it’s gonna take all of us. Who’s in?”
The hero commercial was supported by a behind-the-scenes film.
The spearhead spot runs across ESPN and ABC throughout college football season and additional commercials will roll out in the coming weeks.
“We needed this to feel epic,” said ESPN SVP Marketing Laura Gentile.
“Peter was able to capture the pageantry and the energy the fans will bring to the game.”
The campaign was created by agency McKinney and produced out of Berg’s commercial production company Film 47.
