Would you switch your support from one club to another for cash?
How much would it take?
To kick-off 2018 the Bundesliga launched a new digital and social ‘Loyalty Test’ spot that secretly filmed fans of various teams in German’s top football league as they were tempted with switch their support.
The narrative of the online video, developed with Belgium based agency Duval Guillaume, sees two fake football agents individually inviting three committed fans of three different teams (FC Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach) and asked them what it might take to lure them into switching sides.
Fame, a car, or just cold hard cash?
Thankfully for the three supporters, their clubs and for the league, all three fans resisted all temptations defiantly arguing that football is about character and passion and not money or material rewards.
Plus, they all said that changing club loyalty would be like changing their identity.
As these die-hard, fully fans walked out from the interview room, they were greeted by cheered from each of their their clubs.
The film finishes with the copy line “True Fans Are Not For Sale”.
“It’s winter break in the Bundesliga which means the transfer window is open. The winter mercato used to be just there, today it has become a hot topic. Where will players go? And for how much money?” explained a Duval Guillaume spokesperson.
“Think about the Neymar transfer this season. Everyone talks about star players that change colours for money but what would a star fan do? This film puts every fan on a pedestal and really proves that fans have no price.”
Comment:
Despite the money flooding in to the modern game, fulled by broadcast rights, sponsorship and marketing, it still seems that fans can’t be tempted to switch sides.
It’s a shame more players (and their agents) shared the feeling.
(But then again, what would fans have to gossip and speculate about during the Winter Break?)
