At the start of the new season, KFC leveraged its long-standing Australian sports partnerships with the NRL and AFL with new sports-linked menu items and an anthemic soundtrack to the 2023 footy seasons called ‘Fried Night Footy’.
The audio strand of the marketing saw the fast food outfit team up with Shannon Noll (an Australian singer-songwriter who rose to fame as runner-up of the first season of Australian Idol in 2003) and dance-funk trio the DZ Deathrays to create an anthem that acts as an ode to both Friday Night Footy and KFC’s ‘Fried Night Footy’ activation.
The ‘Fried Night Footy Anthem’ soundtrack KFC’s footy TV advertising throughout the 2023 season during both NRL and AFL television broadcasts. It initially dropped online across the quick service restaurant chain’s digital and social channels from 28 February and debuted on air during the first Friday Night Footy match of the season on 3 March.
KFC also launched a set of special footy season menu items including the ‘Shannon Dinner Roll’ which was served up to fans for free on 11 March at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe for new NRL team the Dolphins first home game and also available in-restaurant and at numerous games through the season.
For those who can’t get to a game themselves, but want to enjoy footy and KFC, the chain has created the ‘Fried Night Footy Feast’ which consists of 6 pieces of Original Recipe Chicken, 8 Original Tenders, 6 Nuggets, 1 Regular Popcorn Chicken, 2 Large Chips and Sipping Sauces and which can be ordered in-restaurant or via the KFC App.
“We are thrilled to be continuing our long-standing partnerships with the NRL and AFL, complimented this season by our new Footy anthem – ‘Fried Night Footy’ – created in partnership with Shannon Noll and DZ Deathrays,” said KFC Australia CMO Sally Spriggs. “The anthem alongside the bespoke footy snack, the Shannon Dinner Roll, sets us up for an exciting season of footy ahead.”
Shannon Noll added: “I’m super happy to be working with KFC and DZ Deathrays on this anthem. It’s a definite earworm and you’re gonna catch yourself singing it in the shower, the car and maybe even in your sleep! Plus, working with KFC to create the Shannon Roll, talk about a dream come true.”
