LeBron James may have broken the NBA’s all-time scoring record, but not everyone in the sports world seem too impressed: take Nike’s new, sniping puppet pundits who seem set on discrediting the LA Lakers megastar.
After finally beating Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s long-standing record in his 20th professional NBA season, most of the sporting community rose to acclaim James’ achievement….except the puppets who host the first episode of a new, comic online series from the athlete’s own sportswear partner Nike
Posted on 7 February, Episode One of the ‘Mad + Madder’ online series see a downbeat, sceptical puppet duo make up stories, take cheap shots and demand a recount of the top scorers’ achievements, as well as fire off critical questions such as “How can you be a world champion if you haven’t played everyone on Earth?”
Nike’s numbers-don’t-lie parody campaign plays on the critics, deniers, naysayers and sceptics who didn’t believe that James could/would ever beat Abdul-Jabbar’s seemingly unbreakable total points record.
Episode Two dropped 24 hours later on 8 February to mark James’ 38,388 points and counting for King James.
The series also sees the puppet hosts invite other Nike athlete ambassadors onto their show: including Naomi Osaka, Anthony Davis and Diana Taurasi.

The online video series campaign ran in parallel with the black-and-white ‘Witness Greatness’ film created by Nike and long-time agency partner Wieden+Kennedy Portland to commemorate the basketballer’s legacy.
