The start of December saw Monster Energy release a short film titled ‘Nerve’ which tells the true story of athlete ambassador and US freeskier and X Games star Colby Stevenson’s battle to overcome a traumatic brain injury after a near-career ending car crash in 2016 to win two 2020/21 FIS Freeski Crystal Globes.
Stevenson, a 23-year-old two-time X Games gold medallist from Park City (Utah) suffered a shattered skull four years ago in a car accident after which his doctors were certain that he would never ski competitively again. The film tells the story of his arduous rehabilitation and amazing recovery and features Colby and his mother Carol Stevenson.
The brand backed film, which was written and directed by fellow professional freeski athlete and filmmaker Clayton Vila of Greenpoint Pictures, was promoted through an integrated campaign launched on 1 December.
“My whole dream, everything was over. I might not ever be the same again, but I always had hope,” said Colby in the energy drink’s documentary. “Before the crash, I did not see how lucky I was. Once it was all taken away, I started seeing the beauty in the little things. I started to be grateful.”
“It was really special writing and directing this film about Colby for Monster Energy, who is a long time sponsor of both Colby and I,” explained Director Clayton. “In having Colby and his mother star in the film, I think we achieved a level of emotion that would have been hard to get any other way. I am so grateful to both of them and admire their bravery.”
