In mid-December, with the FIFA men’s 2022 World Cup under way, sports brand Puma launched a short film titled ‘History Doesn’t Repeat Itself’ which saw Neymar Jr dedicate his own achievements in equaling the Brazil National Team goal scoring record to his hero Pelé.
Created by Moonwalk Films and RSA Films, the film led campaign saw Neymar dedicate his mid-tournament achievement of reaching 77 goals for Brazil – equaling the total scored by The King for his country – to Pelé.
Puma’s video features Neymar talking about his football journey and what it means for him to reach such the prestigious milestone for Brazil and then dedicate the achievement to his hero Pelé and to all those who have helped him get there.
The PSG and Brazil attacker explains that Pelé has been an idol and inspiration to him ever since he first dreamed of playing football. The film sees Neymar ask not to be compared to The King because ‘history doesn’t repeat itself’ and instead to honour and celebrate heroes from the past and look to inspire a new generation of heroes yet to be crowned.
‘History Doesn’t Repeat Itself’ dropped across the brand and player’s channels from 10 December.
“For the production of the film, the team had access to Neymar Jr’s personal collection where they found photos of family, friends, medals, trophies, school notebooks, tickets from his first trips to Barcelona and Paris and much more” said Director Del Reginato. “In the middle of it all, they found images like the moment he signed his first contract with Santos F.C., his first goal as a professional player, and a drawing he made on the back cover of his school notebook where he portrayed Pelé in a moment of celebration and wrote Neymar on the back on top of the number 10. The campaign has an intimate feeling, a tribute to Pelé and portrays the moment when Neymar Jr finds the notebook years later.”
Campaign production was by Moonwalk Films and RSA Films where the team included Director and Online Editor Del Reginato, Creative Director Ana Mattioni, Copywriter Ana Mattioni, Designers João Linneu and Bruno Oppido, Art Assistant Beatriz Sotero, Project Manager Dani Frid Rossi, Producer Etienne Labastie, Director Of Photography Salomé Rapinat, 1st AC Ella Delormas, 2nd AC Tom Haudry, Grip Louis Gasca, Gaffer Hugo Mesnil and Set Designer Penelope Hemon. Music and sound was handled by Satélite Áudio.

Sadly, just a few days later, Pelé – arguably the greatest player every to play the beautiful game – passed away and Puma directly honoured the man and his legacy with a series of simple, yet powerful ‘Forever King’ posts.
