The NFL’s second Super Bowl V spot, ‘Inspire Change’, promoted its ongoing programme promoting equality carrying the message that ‘it takes all of us’ to create change and advance social justice and seeking to drive viewers online to the project web hub at NFL.com/InspireChange.
The ad pledges an end to systemic racism: referencing inspiring quotes from former San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson’s Hall of Fame speech and plays out with images of civil rights protests and a graphic noting that the NFL is giving $250 million to fight systemic racism.

But the spot drew conflicting reactions amongst viewers.
While some praised its message and argued that it reflected the league’s change of heart around equality issues, others criticised the NFL for still failing to apologise and/or publicly made amends with still unsigned Colin Kaepernick (the onetime San Francisco 49ers quarterback who’s kneeling during the National Anthem starting in 2016 to call attention to police brutality).
Even Mariah Carey threw some Twitter shade on the league immediately after it aired during Super Bowl 2021.
Please. Dis-respectful to our flag, to our country and to all the MEN and WOMAN who fought for our FLAG. I would love for my Dad to have a five minute conversation with him.
