Nike honoured athlete ambassador Cristiano Ronaldo’s latest career milestones through a multi-strand ‘Greatness Starts With A Goal’ campaign which spanned social media content and the renovation of a community football pitch on the island of Madeira where the Portuguese soccer star was born 36 years ago.
Marking the Portugal skipper’s new status as the all-time leading goal scorer in men’s international football (following his two World Cup qualifier strikes against the Republic of Ireland on 1 September) and his return to Manchester United (the club where he first found global fame), the sportswear behemoth celebrated the twin milestones by refurbishing a community pitch in his native Madeira and dedicating it the CR7 and launching an online spot.
The pitch is located in the Funchal Community Centre where Ronaldo spent his early footballing years and the refurb programme included goal frames painted and designed by the Portuguese artist AkaCorleone. These goal arches illustrate the successful career of the Portuguese footballer in 15 different scenes.
While Wieden + Kenney Amsterdam also created an online film amplified across Nike Football platforms which also explores Ronaldo’s commitment to his personal goals on his journey to soccer success. The spot includes audio testimonies from former and current players and teammates who have witnessed his dedication and determination throughout his career.
A third strand of the initiative saw Nike release a commemorative set of CR110 boots which the Portland-based sports equipment company has donated to emerging stars from all the countries where the striker has played during his career: Portugal, the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy.
The multicoloured print on the boots is itself a visual exploration of Ronaldo’s records and it include a reference to a childhood anecdote when a young Ronaldo accidentally broke the window of a neighbour during a kickabout. Further details on the CR110 boots include the colours of the Portuguese flag and a graphic interpretation of the date and time that Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first goal for the Portuguese team.
