Pele, Maradona, Zidane, Beckham & Other FIFA Greats Clap In #WeWillWin Essential Worker Tribute

50 of the world’s greatest footballers – from Pele and Diego Maradona, to David Beckham, Pelé and Zinedine Zidane – paid tribute to healthcare and other essential workers around the world leading the fight against Covid-19 in a new FIFA campaign called #WeWillWin.

Working with creative agency VMLY&R Portugal, FIFA assembled the great team of footballers who never played together from the past and present who were filmed individually during lockdown.

Each applauds those careers, medical professionals and essential workers around the world who are risking their lives to battle the pandemic.

Other big names among the 50-strong star-studded lineup include Holger Badstuber, Bhaichung Bhutia, Lucy Bronze, Gianluigi Buffon, Cafu, Fabio Cannavaro, Iker Casillas, Deyna Castellanos, Giorgio Chiellini, Charlyn Corral, El Hadji Diouf, Youri Djorkaeff, Han Duan, Magdalena Eriksson, Samuel Eto’o, Pernille Harder and Javier Hernández, plus Luis Hernández, Kaká, Carli Lloyd, Marta, Vivianne Miedema, Ajara Nchout, Mesut Özil, Norma Palafox, Pavel Pardo, Park Jisung, Gerard Piqué, Alexia Putellas, Sergio Ramos, Nicole Reigner, Wendie Renard, Roberto Carlos, James Rodríguez, Ronaldo, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Virginia Torrecilla, Yaya Touré, Marco van Basten, Daniëlle van de Donk, Ivan Vicelich, Arturo Vidal and Javier Zanetti.

Other England players in the spot include current skipper Harry Kane, as well as Michael Owen and Harry Maguire.

Comment:

The campaign follows previous Covid-19 activations from FIFA such as its practical ‘Tactics To Tackle..’ work in partnership with the WHO based on promoting messaging about how to stay safe during the coronavirus pandemic (see case study).

It also rolls out amidst plenty of speculation and media coverage about football’s financial health and the issue of billionaire owners and profitable clubs furloughing support staff, the subsequent decision to reverse this move by some clubs, a debate over footballer wage reductions and charity contributions.

This even led to FIFA drawing up its own guidelines for clubs and associations to handle appeals and decision over player wage cuts – which aren’t, as of yet, being followed particularly closely.
