Sky Sports, ECB & Lambeth Council Transform Community Cricket Playground For Dynamos Cricket

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) worked with broadcast partner Sky Sports and London local authority Lambeth Council to renovate a playground on the Mawbey Brough Estate to install a permanent Dynamos Cricket Intro wicket and bring to life the governing body’s ‘Dynamos Cricket Intros’ initiative.

Summer 2022 saw the ECB enter the second year of its ‘Dynamos Cricket Intros’ – a multi-year initiative hosting free multi week courses and distributing free kits in schools and community centres across  the UK – and to bring the initiative to life it worked with Sky Sports, Lambeth Council and creative agency RPM on a pilot project which aims to bring communities together by creating a new colourful cricketing space to play cricket in South London.

Situated not far from Surrey’s famous The Oval, the newly renovated playground features a vibrant design from Global Street Artists and permanent wickets for the community to use for years to come and the project was promoted through a PR and social media campaign.

“Dynamos Cricket Intros is a scheme we designed with the ECB to address barriers that might stop children getting into the sport,” explained Sky Sports Participation Lead Jack Eatherly. “As we enter the second year of this initiative, we are delighted to be working with Lambeth Council on this pilot project, designed and produced with RPM and can’t wait to see this first playground be enjoyed by everyone.”

Agency RPM Managing Director Dom Robertson commented: “Bringing this new Dynamos Cricket wicket to Mawbey Borough Estate is so exciting for all involved. The Dynamos Cricket Intros initiative aims to reduce barriers to cricket participation, and access to space to play is one of those barriers. We hope this installation brings new children to the game and becomes part of the community here in Lambeth.”

As well provided new facilities and youth-focused participatory courses and skills training, the Dynamos Cricket Intros scheme is also helping train 500 new coaches from different communities.
