Football Australia revealed its Socceroos squad for the upcoming 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup through an online video featuring Aussie actor Firass Dirani.
Narrating a three-minute monologue, the spot saw Dirani talk about past Australia’s World Cup teams and how players have overcome individual and communal challenges ranging from leaving home at 14 to fleeing warzones to start a new life in Australia.
The film, which dropped across Football Australia’s digital and social platforms from 8 November and which was backed by a suite of social supporting content, also promotes the #GiveIt100 campaign: which marks the 100-year anniversary of the first Australian national team.
"As soon as I read it (the script), I thought wow"! @FirassD delivered a rousing performance as he details the making of the #Socceroos' FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ squad announcement video, and admitted it was an absolute honour to be involved #GiveIt100

“It’s been a unique and difficult qualification campaign and we now arrive in Qatar with an exciting squad which will do everything to make Australia proud on the world stage.”
Commented Dirani: “I was more than happy to be part of the squad announcement, to celebrate the boys, and support their journey to Qatar for the World Cup.“

Australia, who will play its opening Qatar 2022 game against France on 23 November, join the trend for turning squad reveals into a fan-focused, content-led marketing event rather than just a PR announcement.
Arguably England have led the way with this tactic and The FA’s recent squad reveal campaigns range from its previous men’s team initiatives such as 2018’s ‘For The Nation, By The Nation’ and 2021’s ‘The Call Up’, plus June 2022’s women’s team ‘Our England‘ film and 10 November 2022’s one-shot style animation.
