Late January and early February saw the launch of the World Surf League’s (WSL) ‘We Are One Ocean’ campaign which calls for the protection of 30% of the planet’s oceans by 2030 (dubbed ‘30×30’) to further build support for its mission to protect nature and life on earth.
The multi-channel campaign sees the global pro surfing body encourages people around the world to join the global movement by signing a petition at weareoneocean.org which calls for world leaders to adopt the ‘30×30’ target at the upcoming United Nations Convention.
We Are One Ocean is a movement gathering signatures to protect 30% of our shared, global ocean by 2030.

As well as signing the petition, the WSL is also asking people to share a message of love for the ocean over the upcoming Valentine’s Day weekend.
To promote the campaign, the WSL’s hero film is supported by a content video series which shares the stories of six people’s connection to the ocean and highlights their own personal motivation for signing the petition.
Rolling out from 9 February, the series features prominent surfers, scientists and environmentalists: including reigning WSL Champion Italo Ferreira, Dr Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, Mikey February, Sophia Medina and surfer, chemist and journalist Dr Cliff Kapono.
Plus, WSL is hosting a series of virtual experiences to connect people with their love for the ocean and inspire them to take action to protect it.
These experiences include a conversation with author Siraad Dirshe and environmentalist Leah Thomas, as well as a charcoal wave drawing lesson with Championship Tour surfer Courtney Conlogue.
The campaign is inspired by ‘WSL PURE’: the WSL’s non-profit arm which has built a growing coalition of more than 60 Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and corporations in support of We Are One Ocean, including the Natural Resources Defense Council, Conservation International, Surfrider Foundation, Sea Legacy, Lonely Whale, PADI and World Sailing.
“Establishing fully and highly protected areas is an incredible way to build resiliency in our ocean. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protect critical ocean habitat and biodiversity for generations to come,” said Reece Pacheco, SVP Ocean Responsibility, WSL. “This isn’t just about the ocean. It’s about people. By protecting the ocean, and hitting 30×30, we guarantee a healthier future for all.”
“As a surfer, the ocean is my home and my place of work. It’s really important to me to do what I can to protect it,” said Brazilian surfer Ferreira. “I hope that by sharing my story and my love for the ocean it will inspire people to sign the petition.”
Several brands have also joined the project: including Shiseido, Gillette Venus and the the all-new Jeep 4xe hybrid electric which have all joined as official partners of the WSL’s ‘We Are One Ocean’ initiative.
